John Meyer's Grandson Wants to Make a Donation...

March 23 - Well, this is the recovery week. Karlis saw the doctor yesterday (Monday) and had his blood counts checked. The results are that they are very low. Jane is checking his temperature frequently to monitor if an infection is setting in. I stopped over this noon after ball to see him. He said it would be okay if I stopped for a short while. He was on the couch and had earlier been complaining about being cold. But when I got there he had pushed off the blankets and was watching a "I Love Trains" DVD from some years ago. We played with a small battery operated train set for a while then he switched over to playing Madden football on the Wii - I watched as the Buccaneers were beating the Cowboys. I left after an hour or so. He's not eating. He tried a popsicle and a bit later some apple - neither appealed to him.

The front page news is that he is on it. The Minneapolis Star Tribune in fact. Some of you who are following his progress on the CaringBridge site may have heard this story but I will give the others some background here before you click on the attached newspaper article. Karlis has received such an outpouring of cards and gifts he has felt a bit guilty and he wants to share some of that love with others. He received $300 from his Latvian School class. The article will explain how he wants to deal with this generous gift. The Star Tribune got wind of his thoughtfulness and sent a reporter out to interview him - while riding on the light rail no less.

Our hopes are that this is the low point of his care for this round of chemo and that his white cell count will rebound in the next few days. Hopefully enough so he can stop in for a few hours at school next week and see his friends. Two more rounds of chemo to go, next round scheduled for March 4.

Just click on the web site below to view the article and a video which obviously did not appear in the paper.

Thanks for many thoughts and prayers,
      Mary Ann and John
