How This Works
West Metro Senior Softball is the place to be if you’re over 50, love a good game and like to have fun! We’re organized into two divisions to enable players to participate at the level that makes sense for them … so everyone gets plenty of playing time and has fun. We don't hold try-outs for our league, but you're welcome to stop by any gameday to try us out!
Our Northwoods and National Divisions
Depending on your softball background and current level of activity, you’ll probably start out in our Northwoods Division. This group is made up of the folks that either have little softball experience, haven't played for a long time or are a bit older (usually 70+). It's also a good place for folks that have played in the long-ago past and need to work into game-shape.
If you’ve been playing ball at a higher level recently, we’ll talk it over with you, and you could end up in the National Division, which is made up mostly of younger, tournament team players who are used to very competitive games.
The Game Day Schedule – May to the end of August
We play every Tuesday and Thursday all summer. Each day starts at 9:00 a.m. with batting practice. First games will begin promptly at 10:00. We’ll finish two games each day, usually by 12:45 or 1:00 p.m. Some play one day a week, some two and some only sporadically. You can play when it works for you.
Week One: “Spring Training.” The first week of our Spring/Summer season is pretty casual. We’ll assign everyone to a field and after batting practice, we’ll play a couple of pick-up games on each of our diamonds. This gives our new players a chance to see what the games are like and gives us a chance to make sure you’re matched up in the division that makes the most sense for you.
The Regular Season:
After “Spring Training,” we have some of our more experienced players work together to “Draft” teams for the first of two summer sessions. Our regular schedule will begin and continue for six or seven weeks, to be determined by the board.
After Session One, we’ll hold another draft, create all-new teams and Session Two will run until the end of August. We usually wrap up our summer with our annual league BBQ picnic and one-pitch tournament. As we continue to adapt to COVID, any "extracurricular" plans will be announced. More on those happenings as we near the end of “Summer.”
Through the summer, we track game results, keep track of division standings and at the end of each session, crown new Champs for each division in a very impressive ceremony, with trophies, team photographs and jokes.
The Fun Isn’t Confined to the Softball Diamond
When it's possible (see our COVID protocol info), we have a picnic lunch every gameday, after we're done with the games. Everyone gets to take turns providing the food and handling the grilling duties once per summer, along with one to three partners ... there’s a sign-up sheet at the park, or your group can even Sign Up Here . The fare ranges from hot dogs and chips to burgers, pizza, pulled pork or whatever the day’s volunteers decide to try! Thanks to Beer Man and the Soda-Jerk, we have beer and pop available every day as well for a very nominal charge,
What to Bring, What to Wear
All you need to get started is a glove...we have very good league bats you can use until you decide to really ramp up and get your own. No uniforms...just dress for the weather and active exercise. No metal baseball cleats are allowed, but many players use rubber cleats, turf shoes or just running shoes with a good tread. When you send in your registration and payment, the league will provide one of our very cool baseball hats with your name on it.
Fall Ball + Domeball = Year-round Softball!
After our 1-Pitch tournament and BBQ in late August, we go right into our Fall League schedule at Round Lake. Fall Ball, which will run through the month of October, is a much more casual schedule of pick-up games and is included in your summer registration fee! As the last leaves fall, along with our first snowflakes, we’ll roll on into the beginning of our winter Domeball league at The Academy of Holy Angels Stardome. We’ll provide more information on Fall League and Domeball as those seasons approach.
